Wisdom Teeth timeline
Usually a human being start getting their first teeth in the age between 7 months to 24 months. And they fall off in the same order in which they came from the age of 6 to 7 years. After these come the permanent teeth.
At the age of around 17 to 25 years, come the wisdom teeth. At this age, it is believed that people gain maturity and wisdom, thus the name of the teeth.
Wisdom teeth are known as the third molars and are the last set of teeth emerging in the human mouth.
Number of Wisdom Teeth
Usually people get four wisdom teeth in all the four quarters, but they may vary in number individually. A person may have less than or more than four wisdom teeth. The extra teeth that emerge in a person are known as the supplementary teeth.
Use and Function
The third molars or the wisdom teeth provide no functionality now, but in the past when humans were dependent on things for eating which required more chewing power, thus the third molars were essential then. This is just an evolutionary thing that wisdom teeth erupt, though we do not require them anymore.
Problem: Wisdom Teeth Pain
Wisdom teeth occur behind the molars. Not everyone have wisdom teeth(wisdom teeth do not grow in them at all) and not everyone who gets wisdom teeth have pain during this. The reason behind the pain is usually that the wisdom teeth try to emerge by pushing other teeth and gums.
Some of the visible signs that the pain you have in the mouth is due to the wisdom teeth are swollen gums, redness in the gums behind the molars, very painful to touch etc. Instead of deciding on your own that the pain is becuase of wisdom teeth, it is better to consult a dentist to make sure that there is no other oral problems.
Pain from Impaction
Many people get their wisdom teeth without any pain at all, but others face a lot of pain during this period. It is believed by the doctors that our jaws have smaller than the jaws our ancestors had. Due to this small space, the wisdom teeth emerge by pushing the other teeth and gum tissues which can make it very painful. This is called impaction and can be recognised by jaw pain, redness and tenderness in the gums. This could harm the other teeth and surrounding gum areas. Not only this, but it can also cause cysts and tumours which can be difficult to treat at a later age.
Removal of Wisdom Teeth
It is a good option to get your wisdom teeth removed if it is very painful for you Getting it done at an early age will be beneficial and reduce the healing time and prevent infections as compared if done at an age more than forty. It is advised by the dentists to get the wisdom teeth removed even if they emerge without pain. The main reason behind this is that they erupt behind the molars and are quite difficult to clean. This can result in cavities and other infections. So it is better that they are removed by a dentist. You can also consult him on what precautions are required to heal the teeth as soon as possible and how to prevent any infections. Consulting your doctor will help you prevent any future problems.
Is removal of Wisdom Teeth painful?
Before actually removing your wisdom teeth, you are given proper amount of anesthesia by the dentist which will make the area numb and you will not face any pain at the time of removal of your wisdom teeth. If you feel any pain, you can ask your dentist to take care of it.
So, we can say that a wisdom teeth has nothing to do with your wisdom. It’s only reason is evolutionary. Removal of wisdom teeth is not necessary in case you do not face any pain or problems during its eruption, but you need to make sure that you keep them clean to avoid any future problems.
